The Transit van
came off the line at Fords Langley plant and in just a few months the camper van
companies had the new Transit campers on the road and with the new wide body and
chassis cab versions they were very fast in using the Transit to come up with
every type of camper you could imagine.
Companies such as Martin Walker put large
amounts of money into research and design and the camper van we know today was
born. This was great for us Transit enthusiasts as these summer vans, as I call
them, were used in dry conditions by older drivers who had all the time in the
world to give their vans the attention they needed to keep them on the road and
rust free. 9 times out of 10 they were stored inside
during the winter months making them some of the best early model Transits left on the roads
today.
Off the back of the camper van came the
custom side of the van scene which was around at that time and even today people still
look at custom vans to get ideas for their campers and this works both ways, as I
know only too well, custom vanners still look at campers all the time to get ideas of
what was around so that they could incorporate those ideas into their custom
vans.
